English Walnut Music Stand

The strangest thing kept happening whenever I practiced playing the accordion at home. Every time I developed a full head of steam I could hear the kids yelling, but I could only make out a few words. I heard “can’t,” “stand,” “accordion,” and “music.” It took me a little while, but I finally figured out what was going on—they were concerned that I couldn’t practice my accordion without a proper music stand! So for the sake of the family, I made this little telescoping walnut music stand. Unfortunately, while I was working on it, my new accordion mysteriously disappeared. Oh well.

Adjustable in height and angle, this music stand is just another variant of the previous tripod stand—the legs attach to the base with sliding dovetails, and the top joins to a disc tenoned onto the top of the shaft. The main difference in this stand is the construction of the hollow tube for the telescoping pedestal. Once you have made this tube, the dovetailing and turning proceeds as before.

You can make the tube (a tube being nothing surrounded by something) in either of two ways. You can take nothing and surround it with something (take four boards and glue them together lengthwise, making a long, narrow box); or you can start with something (a long square timber) and put nothingness into it (hollow it out). After making the square tube by either of these methods, you shave it down and set it into the lathe and turn it as you would any other length of wood.

If you glue up a tube from four boards, you may make your best match of grain by sawing them all from a single wide board, essentially taking a flat piece and rolling it up into a tube. If you are working from a solid block, you can saw off one side and glue it back on after hollowing, or make a cap board that closely matches the grain of the larger piece. In any case, the lower part of the tube where the legs attach must be solid to allow for the sliding dovetails. In the glued-up tube of four boards, you insert
